ventriculomegaly

Enlargement of the brain's ventricles, which may indicate hydrocephalus or other neurological conditions in children.

Full Definition

Ventriculomegaly refers to the abnormal enlargement of the cerebral ventricles, the fluid-filled spaces within the brain. In pediatric patients, this condition can be detected prenatally through ultrasound or postnatally through neuroimaging studies such as CT or MRI. Ventriculomegaly may be isolated or associated with other brain abnormalities, and can result from various causes including obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid flow (hydrocephalus), brain atrophy, or developmental anomalies. The degree of enlargement is classified as mild, moderate, or severe based on measurement criteria. Depending on the underlying cause and severity, treatment may range from observation to surgical intervention such as ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from hydrocephalus, which specifically implies increased intracranial pressure.
