post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis

Acute glomerular inflammation following group A streptococcal infection, presenting with hematuria, proteinuria, and often hypertension in children.

Full Definition

Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) is an immune complex-mediated glomerular disease occurring 1-6 weeks after group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection of the throat or skin. The condition predominantly affects school-age children and presents with acute nephritic syndrome including gross hematuria (cola-colored urine), mild proteinuria, hypertension, and edema. Laboratory findings include decreased complement levels (C3, CH50) and elevated anti-streptococcal antibodies. The prognosis is excellent in children, with spontaneous resolution expected within 6-8 weeks and minimal risk of chronic kidney disease.

Usage

Usage note: Emphasize the excellent prognosis in children and the typical self-limiting course.

In Context

  • "Complete recovery from post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis was confirmed by normalization of urine and complement levels at 8 weeks." — Follow-up evaluation
