Renal biopsy is a diagnostic procedure involving obtaining kidney tissue samples for microscopic examination using light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. In pediatric nephrology, indications include unexplained proteinuria, hematuria with decreased kidney function, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, or steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. The procedure is typically performed under ultrasound guidance using a percutaneous approach, though open surgical biopsy may be required in young children or those with bleeding disorders. Adequate tissue sampling requires obtaining at least 10-15 glomeruli for accurate diagnosis.
