VCUG
Also written as: VCUG — voiding cystourethrogram
Radiologic study using contrast to visualize the bladder and detect vesicoureteral reflux during voiding.
Full Definition
Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is a fluoroscopic study that evaluates the lower urinary tract by filling the bladder with contrast material and observing during voiding. This study is the gold standard for diagnosing and grading vesicoureteral reflux in children. The procedure involves catheterization, bladder filling, and imaging during both filling and voiding phases. VCUG is also used to assess bladder anatomy, urethral abnormalities, and voiding dysfunction. In pediatric patients, the study requires careful technique to minimize radiation exposure and psychological trauma, often necessitating age-appropriate preparation and sometimes sedation.
Usage
Usage note: Always specify reflux grade using the international classification system (grades I-V).
