Full Definition

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of hemiplegia that can affect either side of the body and may alternate between sides. Episodes typically begin before 18 months of age and can be triggered by physical or emotional stress, bright lights, water exposure, or fatigue. During attacks, children may experience weakness, dystonia, or complete paralysis of one side of the body. Between episodes, children often show developmental delays, intellectual disability, and movement disorders. Most cases are caused by mutations in the ATP1A3 gene.
