FIRES

Pronunciation: FY-ers

Also written as: FIRES — Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome

Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome, a rare condition where previously healthy children develop refractory status epilepticus following a febrile illness.

Full Definition

FIRES is a devastating condition affecting previously healthy children who develop super-refractory status epilepticus following a nonspecific febrile illness. The seizures are extremely difficult to control despite multiple antiepileptic medications and anesthetic agents. The condition has a poor prognosis with high mortality and morbidity rates, often resulting in severe cognitive impairment in survivors. The pathophysiology is poorly understood, and treatment remains largely supportive with aggressive seizure management.
