Full Definition

An intracranial pressure (ICP) monitor is a medical device surgically placed to continuously measure pressure within the skull in critically ill pediatric patients. ICP monitoring is essential in managing conditions such as traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, or post-operative neurosurgical patients. The device provides real-time pressure measurements, allowing for immediate intervention when dangerous elevations occur. In pediatric neurology documentation, ICP values, trends, and interventions based on pressure readings must be carefully recorded. Normal ICP values differ by age, with infants having lower baseline pressures than older children.
