Full Definition

A vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) is a surgically implanted device consisting of a pulse generator placed in the chest and electrodes wrapped around the left vagus nerve in the neck. The device delivers programmed electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve, which can reduce seizure frequency and severity in children with medication-resistant epilepsy. VNS is considered a palliative treatment rather than curative, typically reducing seizures by 50% or more in about half of pediatric patients. The device can be activated by patients or caregivers using a handheld magnet during seizure auras or emerging seizures.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify left vagus nerve, as right vagal stimulation can affect cardiac function. Distinguish from other neuromodulation devices.
