The crowding phenomenon describes the increased difficulty in recognizing optotypes when they are surrounded by neighboring letters or symbols, compared to identifying the same optotypes in isolation. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in amblyopic eyes and represents a fundamental aspect of the amblyopic deficit beyond simple visual acuity reduction. Crowding effects are more severe for letters presented linearly (as in words) than for isolated letters, which explains why children with amblyopia may perform better on single-letter acuity tests than on reading tasks. The phenomenon contributes to reading difficulties in amblyopic children and influences the choice of visual acuity testing methods, with linear acuity tests providing more functionally relevant information than single-letter tests.
