Full Definition

Cyclopentolate is a synthetic anticholinergic medication that blocks muscarinic receptors in the ciliary muscle, causing cycloplegia (paralysis of accommodation) and mydriasis (pupil dilation). In pediatric patients, cycloplegia is essential for accurate refraction because children have strong accommodative ability that can mask hyperopia or create pseudomyopia. The 1% concentration is typically used in children, with onset in 30-60 minutes and duration of 6-24 hours. Common side effects include photophobia, blurred near vision, and rarely, systemic effects such as flushing, fever, or behavioral changes. Cyclopentolate is preferred over atropine for routine pediatric refractions due to its shorter duration of action.
