Form of amblyopia caused by visual deprivation during critical period of development due to media opacity or severe ptosis.

Full Definition

Deprivation amblyopia, also known as stimulus-deprivation amblyopia or form-vision deprivation amblyopia, occurs when clear visual input is prevented from reaching the retina during the critical period of visual development. Common causes include dense cataracts, severe ptosis, corneal opacity, or vitreous hemorrhage. Unlike other forms of amblyopia, deprivation amblyopia can develop rapidly and may be irreversible if the deprivation is not promptly addressed. The severity depends on the timing, duration, and density of the deprivation, with bilateral cases often resulting in severe visual impairment including nystagmus. Treatment requires immediate removal of the deprivation followed by aggressive optical rehabilitation and amblyopia therapy.
