Full Definition
Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) is a congenital disorder resulting from abnormal innervation of the lateral rectus muscle by branches of the oculomotor nerve instead of the abducens nerve. This results in co-contraction of the medial and lateral rectus muscles, causing globe retraction and narrowing of the palpebral fissure on adduction. Three types are recognized: Type I (most common) with limited abduction, Type II with limited adduction, and Type III with limited abduction and adduction. DRS accounts for 1-5% of all strabismus cases and may be associated with systemic anomalies including hearing loss and spinal defects.
