Simple screening test for strabismus using corneal light reflexes to estimate the degree of eye misalignment in children.

Full Definition

The Hirschberg test, also known as the corneal light reflex test, is a quick and objective method for detecting and estimating strabismus in children of any age. The examiner directs a penlight toward the child's eyes while the child fixates on the light, then observes the position of the light reflexes on each cornea. In normal alignment, the reflexes appear centered on both corneas. When strabismus is present, the reflex in the deviating eye appears displaced from the center. The test provides a rough estimate of deviation magnitude: displacement to the pupil edge indicates approximately 15 prism diopters, to the limbus indicates 45 prism diopters, and to the limbus edge indicates 90 prism diopters. This test is particularly valuable for screening infants and uncooperative children.
