Automated vision screening technology that uses flash photography to detect refractive errors and eye alignment problems in young children.

Full Definition

Photoscreening is an objective, automated method for detecting vision problems in infants and children using specialized cameras that analyze light reflexes from the eyes. The technique captures images of light reflexes from both eyes simultaneously and uses computer analysis to detect refractive errors, media opacities, and ocular misalignment. This technology is particularly valuable for screening preverbal children and those who cannot cooperate with traditional vision tests. Common devices include the Plusoptix, Spot Vision Screener, and Retinomax. While highly sensitive for detecting significant refractive errors, photoscreening may have higher false-positive rates and cannot replace comprehensive eye examinations.
