ptosis
Pronunciation: TOH-sis
Drooping of the upper eyelid that may obstruct vision in children.
Full Definition
Ptosis is the drooping or falling of the upper eyelid due to weakness or dysfunction of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle or Müller's muscle. In children, ptosis can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired. Congenital ptosis may be associated with superior rectus weakness and requires careful evaluation for amblyopia risk. Severe ptosis that covers the pupil can cause deprivation amblyopia and requires prompt surgical correction. Mild ptosis may be monitored, while moderate to severe cases typically require surgical intervention.
Usage
Usage note: Measure and document the margin-reflex distance and levator function.
