Full Definition
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a proliferative retinopathy that occurs in premature infants, particularly those born before 31 weeks gestation or weighing less than 1250 grams. The condition results from abnormal development of retinal blood vessels and can progress to retinal detachment and blindness if untreated. ROP is classified by zone, stage, and presence of plus disease. Treatment may include laser therapy, anti-VEGF injections, or vitreoretinal surgery.
