acetabular dysplasia
Pronunciation: as-eh-TAB-yoo-lar dis-PLAY-zhah
Developmental abnormality of the hip socket characterized by shallow or inadequately formed acetabulum.
Full Definition
Acetabular dysplasia refers to abnormal development of the hip socket (acetabulum), characterized by inadequate depth or coverage of the femoral head. This condition is a component of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and can range from mild undercoverage to complete dislocation. Radiographic assessment includes measurement of the acetabular index, center-edge angle, and acetabular coverage. In infants, ultrasound evaluation using the Graf classification system is preferred. Treatment depends on age at diagnosis and severity, ranging from observation and positioning devices in newborns to complex reconstructive procedures in older children and adolescents.
Usage
Usage note: Specify severity and provide radiographic measurements when available.
