physeal bar

A bony bridge that forms across the growth plate, causing growth disturbance and potential limb deformity.

Full Definition

A physeal bar is an abnormal bony connection that forms across the physis (growth plate), typically following trauma, infection, or other pathologic processes. This bridge prevents normal longitudinal growth and can lead to angular deformities as the unaffected portion of the physis continues to grow. Treatment may involve bar resection with interposition grafting or corrective osteotomy, depending on the size and location of the bar.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from physeal bridge, which may refer to the surgical procedure rather than the pathologic condition.

In Context

  • "MRI revealed a central physeal bar involving 40% of the distal femoral growth plate." — Radiology report
  • "The angular deformity was secondary to a lateral physeal bar following the initial fracture." — Follow-up clinic note
