A physeal bridge, also known as a bony bar, is an abnormal connection of bone or fibrous tissue that forms across the growth plate (physis), disrupting normal longitudinal growth. These bridges typically develop following trauma, infection, or other insults to the growth plate and can result in partial or complete growth arrest. The consequences depend on the location, size, and timing of bridge formation, potentially causing limb length discrepancy, angular deformity, or joint incongruity. Central bridges tend to cause growth arrest with maintained normal alignment, while peripheral bridges often result in angular deformities as the unaffected portion of the physis continues to grow. Treatment options include bridge resection with interposition material, corrective osteotomy, or completion of physeal arrest depending on the patient's remaining growth potential and degree of deformity.
