Scheuermann's disease

Juvenile kyphosis characterized by wedging of thoracic vertebral bodies during adolescent growth.

Full Definition

A structural kyphotic deformity of the spine that develops during adolescence, characterized by anterior wedging of consecutive vertebral bodies, typically in the thoracic region. The condition involves irregularities of the vertebral endplates, Schmorl's nodes, and narrowing of disk spaces. Diagnosis requires radiographic evidence of at least 5 degrees of anterior wedging in three consecutive vertebrae. Treatment ranges from observation and physical therapy for mild cases to bracing for moderate curves, with surgery reserved for severe, painful, or progressive deformities.

Usage note: Use apostrophe-s after Scheuermann as it is a possessive eponym.
