A minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a flexible tether to modulate spinal growth and correct scoliosis in skeletally immature patients.

Full Definition

Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is an innovative, minimally invasive surgical approach for treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in growing patients. The procedure involves placing a flexible tether (cord) along the convex side of the spinal curve, attached to vertebral bodies with screws. As the child continues to grow, the tether restricts growth on the convex side while allowing continued growth on the concave side, gradually correcting the spinal curvature through modulated growth. This technique offers the potential advantages of preserving spinal motion, avoiding fusion, and working with the patient's remaining growth potential. The procedure is performed thoracoscopically, resulting in smaller incisions compared to traditional spinal fusion surgery.
