Full Definition

The International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification (INPC), an evolution of the Shimada system, categorises peripheral neuroblastic tumours into neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma intermixed, ganglioneuroblastoma nodular, and ganglioneuroma based on histological features including Schwannian stromal content, degree of neuroblastic differentiation, mitosis–karyorrhexis index (MKI), and patient age. Each tumour is assigned a favourable or unfavourable histological designation that is a key input into paediatric oncology risk-stratification algorithms. Accurate transcription of the MKI category (low, intermediate, or high) and differentiation subtype in pathology reports is essential; editorial errors in these fields can directly affect treatment intensity decisions.
