Congenital malformation where abnormal lung tissue lacks normal bronchial connection and has anomalous blood supply.

Full Definition

Bronchopulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital pulmonary malformation characterized by non-functioning lung tissue that lacks normal connection to the tracheobronchial tree and receives its blood supply from systemic rather than pulmonary circulation. Two types exist: intralobar sequestration (within normal lung pleura) and extralobar sequestration (with separate pleural covering). The anomalous tissue does not participate in normal ventilation and may become infected or cause complications due to its abnormal vascular supply. Symptoms can include recurrent pneumonia, chronic cough, or chest pain, though some cases remain asymptomatic until adulthood.
