Blount disease
A growth disorder affecting the medial aspect of the proximal tibial growth plate, causing progressive genu varum deformity.
Full Definition
Blount disease, also known as tibia vara, is a developmental condition that affects the medial portion of the proximal tibial growth plate (physis). It results in progressive bowing of the legs with a characteristic appearance of the tibial metaphysis showing beaking, fragmentation, and sclerosis. The condition is classified into infantile (onset before 4 years) and adolescent forms, with different radiographic staging systems used for prognosis and treatment planning.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from normal physiologic bowing; emphasize the metaphyseal changes.
