developmental dysplasia of hip

Spectrum of hip joint abnormalities in infants ranging from mild acetabular dysplasia to complete hip dislocation, diagnosed via ultrasound or radiography.

Full Definition

A developmental condition affecting the hip joint in infants and young children, encompassing a range of abnormalities from mild acetabular underdevelopment to complete femoral head dislocation. Early diagnosis relies primarily on hip ultrasound using standardized techniques such as the Graf method, while radiographic assessment becomes more reliable after ossification of the femoral head epiphysis around 4-6 months. Risk factors include female gender, breech presentation, and family history. Early detection and treatment with devices such as Pavlik harnesses can prevent long-term complications including avascular necrosis and degenerative joint disease.

Usage

Usage note: Use current terminology 'developmental dysplasia' rather than outdated 'congenital dislocation'.
