Pneumatic reduction is a fluoroscopically guided procedure used to treat intussusception in pediatric patients. The technique involves inserting a balloon catheter into the rectum and introducing air under controlled pressure to push the invaginated bowel segment back to its normal position. This method has largely replaced hydrostatic reduction using barium or saline in many centers due to its effectiveness and reduced risk of peritoneal contamination if perforation occurs. Success rates are highest when performed within 24 hours of symptom onset, and the procedure requires careful monitoring of insufflation pressures to prevent complications.
