A metabolic bone disease in growing children caused by vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate deficiency, resulting in defective bone mineralization.

Full Definition

Rickets is a metabolic bone disorder affecting growing children, characterized by defective mineralization of the growth plates and newly formed bone matrix. The condition most commonly results from vitamin D deficiency but can also be caused by dietary calcium or phosphate deficiency, or hereditary disorders affecting vitamin D metabolism or phosphate regulation. Radiographic features include osteopenia, delayed ossification, widening and irregularity of metaphyses, coxa vara, genu varum or valgum deformities, and in severe cases, looser zones (pseudofractures). The growth plates appear widened, frayed, and cup-shaped. Pediatric radiologists must distinguish between nutritional rickets and various forms of hereditary rickets, as treatment approaches differ significantly. Skeletal surveys may be necessary to assess the extent of deformity and monitor treatment response.
