VACTERL association
Pronunciation: VAK-ter-el
Constellation of congenital anomalies including vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal, and limb defects occurring together more frequently than by chance.
Full Definition
A non-random association of birth defects that includes Vertebral defects, Anal atresia, Cardiac defects, Tracheoesophageal fistula, Renal anomalies, and Limb defects. Diagnosis requires at least three of these component features in the absence of a known genetic syndrome. The condition is not inherited but represents a developmental field defect occurring early in embryogenesis. Imaging plays a crucial role in identifying and characterizing the various component anomalies, often requiring multiple imaging modalities including radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI to fully evaluate all potentially affected organ systems.
Usage
Usage note: VACTERL is the preferred term over VATER; it's an association, not a syndrome, as the exact etiology is unknown.
