The heliotrope rash is a pathognomonic cutaneous manifestation of juvenile dermatomyositis, appearing as a distinctive purple-red to violet discoloration of the upper eyelids. Named after the purple heliotrope flower, this rash may be accompanied by periorbital edema and is often one of the earliest signs of disease. The heliotrope rash, along with Gottron's papules, forms part of the classic dermatologic criteria for diagnosing juvenile dermatomyositis.
