Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Birth defect where abdominal organs herniate into the chest cavity through a defect in the diaphragm.

Full Definition

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a serious birth defect characterized by incomplete formation of the diaphragm, allowing abdominal organs to migrate into the chest cavity. This displacement compresses the developing lungs, leading to pulmonary hypoplasia and persistent pulmonary hypertension. Most cases are left-sided (Bochdalek hernia). Affected infants require immediate respiratory support and may need ECMO before surgical repair. The condition has significant morbidity and mortality related to the degree of lung underdevelopment.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as CDH; most are left-sided Bochdalek hernias.
