Craniosynostosis
Pronunciation: kray-nee-oh-sin-oh-STO-sis
Premature fusion of skull sutures in infants, potentially affecting brain growth and head shape.
Full Definition
Craniosynostosis occurs when one or more of the fibrous sutures in an infant's skull close prematurely, before the brain is fully formed. This can restrict brain growth in affected areas and cause characteristic head shape deformities. The condition may be isolated or part of a genetic syndrome. Treatment involves surgical opening of the fused sutures (craniotomy) and reshaping of the skull to allow normal brain growth and improve cosmetic appearance.
Usage
Usage note: Can be single-suture or multi-suture; syndromic forms require genetic evaluation.
