Duodenal Atresia

Congenital complete obstruction of the duodenum requiring surgical bypass or repair.

Full Definition

Duodenal atresia is a congenital condition where the duodenum fails to recanalize during fetal development, resulting in complete obstruction of the first part of the small intestine. This condition is often associated with Down syndrome and presents with bilious vomiting in newborns. The classic radiographic sign is the 'double bubble' appearance on abdominal X-rays. Surgical treatment involves duodenoduodenostomy or duodenojejunostomy to bypass the obstruction.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from duodenal stenosis, which is partial obstruction.
