Pyloromyotomy
Pronunciation: pie-LOR-oh-my-OT-oh-mee
Surgical division of pyloric muscle fibers to treat hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
Full Definition
Pyloromyotomy is the surgical treatment for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, involving division of the thickened circular muscle fibers of the pylorus while preserving the underlying mucosa. The procedure can be performed through either an open approach (Ramstedt procedure) or laparoscopically. The surgery relieves gastric outlet obstruction and allows normal feeding to resume. Complications are rare but include duodenal perforation and incomplete division requiring repeat surgery.
Usage
Usage note: Specify approach (open vs laparoscopic) when documenting procedure.
