chordee

Pronunciation: kawr-DEE

Downward curvature of the penis, often associated with hypospadias.

Full Definition

Chordee refers to abnormal ventral (downward) curvature of the penis, most commonly seen in association with hypospadias but can occur independently. The curvature is caused by shortened tissue on the ventral aspect of the penis, including skin, fascia, or corpus spongiosum. This condition can affect both function and appearance, potentially causing problems with urination and future sexual function if left uncorrected. Surgical correction typically involves release of the restricting tissue and may require tissue grafting in severe cases. The term originates from the French word for 'cord,' reflecting the appearance of the curved penis.
