hypospadias
Pronunciation: hahy-puh-SPAY-dee-uhs
A congenital condition where the urethral opening is located on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip.
Full Definition
Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies in male infants, occurring in approximately 1 in 300 births. The condition involves abnormal positioning of the urethral meatus (opening) on the ventral (underside) surface of the penis, ranging from mild cases near the glans to severe cases at the base of the penis. Surgical correction, typically performed between 6-18 months of age, aims to create a functional urethra and cosmetically acceptable penis. The condition may be associated with chordee (penile curvature) and requires specialized pediatric urological expertise.
