Full Definition

Myelodysplasia refers to abnormal development or formation of the spinal cord, most commonly associated with neural tube defects such as spina bifida. In the context of pediatric urology, myelodysplasia results in varying degrees of neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction due to interrupted neural pathways controlling micturition and defecation. The severity of urological complications depends on the level and extent of the spinal cord lesion, with higher lesions typically causing more severe dysfunction. Management requires lifelong monitoring for complications including vesicoureteral reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, and chronic kidney disease.
