penile torsion

Rotational deformity of the penis around its longitudinal axis, often associated with hypospadias.

Full Definition

Penile torsion is a rotational deformity where the penis appears twisted around its longitudinal axis, most commonly in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from above. This condition frequently accompanies hypospadias and may be caused by asymmetric development of the corpora cavernosa or surrounding tissues. Surgical correction involves degloving the penis and repositioning the skin sleeve, sometimes requiring dorsal plication or ventral lengthening procedures.

Usage

Usage note: Specify degree and direction of rotation; distinguish from curvature which occurs in a single plane.

In Context

  • "Significant penile torsion was noted intraoperatively and corrected with skin reorientation." — operative report
  • "The patient presented with 45-degree counterclockwise penile torsion requiring surgical correction." — clinical assessment
