phimosis

Pronunciation: fy-MOH-sis

Inability to retract the foreskin over the glans penis due to tight preputial opening.

Full Definition

Phimosis refers to the condition where the foreskin cannot be retracted proximally over the glans penis due to a constricted preputial opening. This can be physiological in young children (normal until 3-5 years of age) or pathological when caused by scarring from infection, trauma, or conditions like balanitis xerotica obliterans. Pathological phimosis may require intervention such as topical steroids or circumcision. Proper assessment distinguishes between normal developmental phimosis and pathological conditions requiring treatment.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between physiological (normal in young children) and pathological phimosis.
