ureteral reimplantation
Surgical procedure to reposition the ureter's entry point into the bladder to correct vesicoureteral reflux or other ureterovesical junction abnormalities.
Full Definition
A reconstructive surgical technique that involves disconnecting the ureter from its abnormal insertion point in the bladder and creating a new ureterovesical junction with an adequate submucosal tunnel to prevent reflux. The procedure may be performed via open, laparoscopic, or robot-assisted approaches. Indications include medically refractory vesicoureteral reflux, ectopic ureter insertion, or ureterovesical junction obstruction. The goal is to create a competent anti-reflux mechanism while maintaining ureteral drainage. Success is measured by resolution of reflux and preservation of renal function.
Usage
Usage note: Specify approach (open, laparoscopic, robotic) and technique (Cohen, Leadbetter-Politano) when documenting.
