The Weiss criteria, also known as the international grading system for vesicoureteral reflux, establish a five-grade classification system (Grade I-V) based on the extent of contrast filling in the ureter and renal collecting system during VCUG. Grade I shows filling of the ureter only, while Grade V demonstrates gross dilatation of the ureter, renal pelvis, and calyces with loss of papillary impressions. These criteria guide treatment decisions and help predict the likelihood of spontaneous resolution versus the need for surgical intervention.
