In pediatric growth assessment, percentiles indicate where a child's measurements (height, weight, head circumference, BMI) rank compared to other children of the same age and sex. For example, a child at the 50th percentile for height is taller than 50% of children their age and shorter than the other 50%. Growth charts typically display the 3rd, 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th, and 97th percentiles. Values below the 3rd percentile or above the 97th percentile, or crossing two major percentile lines over time, may indicate growth concerns requiring further evaluation. Percentiles are preferred over outdated terms like 'normal range.'
