biophysical profile
A fetal assessment tool that evaluates five parameters to determine fetal well-being. Often abbreviated as BPP in medical documentation.
Full Definition
A comprehensive fetal assessment that scores five biophysical parameters: fetal breathing movements, gross body movements, fetal tone, reactive fetal heart rate, and amniotic fluid volume. Each parameter receives a score of 0 or 2, with a maximum total score of 10. The test is typically performed in the third trimester when there are concerns about fetal well-being. A score of 8-10 is considered normal, 6 is equivocal and may require repeat testing, and 4 or less indicates potential fetal compromise requiring immediate evaluation.
Usage
Usage note: Always spell out on first use before using BPP abbreviation. Scores should be written as fractions (e.g., 8/10).
