Cephalopelvic disproportion

Also written as: CPD — Cephalopelvic Disproportion

Condition where the fetal head is too large or the maternal pelvis too small for vaginal delivery.

Full Definition

Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD) occurs when there is a size mismatch between the fetal head and the maternal pelvis that prevents safe vaginal delivery. This can be due to a large fetal head (macrocephaly), a small maternal pelvis, or both. CPD is a common indication for cesarean delivery and can be diagnosed during labor when normal progress fails despite adequate contractions. Editors should be aware that this term is often abbreviated as CPD in clinical documentation.
