Female pelvic type characterized by rounded inlet and adequate dimensions, most favorable for vaginal delivery.

Full Definition

The gynecoid pelvis is the most common and favorable female pelvic type for childbirth, occurring in approximately 50% of women. It is characterized by a rounded or slightly oval pelvic inlet, straight sidewalls, a wide pubic arch (greater than 90 degrees), and adequate anteroposterior and transverse diameters. The sacrum has a normal curve, and the ischial spines are not prominent, providing optimal space for fetal descent and rotation during labor. This pelvic configuration allows for the most straightforward vaginal deliveries with the lowest risk of cephalopelvic disproportion. The gynecoid pelvis is considered the standard against which other pelvic types (android, anthropoid, and platypelloid) are compared when assessing the likelihood of successful vaginal delivery.
