Leopold maneuvers
Pronunciation: LEE-oh-pold mah-NOO-vers
Systematic abdominal palpation technique to determine fetal presentation and position.
Full Definition
A series of four systematic palpation techniques performed on the maternal abdomen to assess fetal lie, presentation, position, and engagement. Named after German obstetrician Christian Gerhard Leopold, these maneuvers involve: (1) palpating the fundus to identify the fetal part, (2) palpating the sides of the uterus to locate the fetal back, (3) grasping the lower uterine segment to identify the presenting part, and (4) determining the degree of flexion and engagement. Essential clinical skill for managing labor and delivery.
Usage
Usage note: Always capitalize 'Leopold' as it is an eponymous term. Use plural 'maneuvers' not singular.
