Lobar pneumonia is a form of pneumonia that affects an entire anatomic lobe of the lung, as opposed to patchy areas (bronchopneumonia). In perinatal medicine, this condition is significant because pneumonia during pregnancy can lead to maternal hypoxia, preterm labor, and fetal complications. Newborns are also at risk, particularly those born prematurely or with compromised immune systems. Group B Streptococcus and other bacterial pathogens are common causes. Early recognition and treatment are crucial to prevent maternal and neonatal morbidity.
