Molding
Overlapping of fetal skull bones during passage through the birth canal.
Full Definition
Molding refers to the normal, temporary reshaping of the fetal head that occurs as it passes through the birth canal during vaginal delivery. The unfused skull bones can overlap slightly, allowing the head to compress and change shape to accommodate the pelvic dimensions. This process is reversible, and the head typically returns to normal shape within days after birth. Excessive molding may indicate cephalopelvic disproportion or prolonged labor.
Usage
Usage note: American spelling 'molding' not 'moulding'.
