nuchal translucency

Pronunciation: NEW-kul trans-LOO-sen-see

Ultrasound measurement of fluid accumulation at the back of a fetus's neck, used for chromosomal abnormality screening.

Full Definition

Nuchal translucency (NT) is a prenatal ultrasound measurement taken between 11-14 weeks of gestation to assess the thickness of fluid at the back of the fetal neck. Increased NT thickness may indicate chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, or congenital heart defects. The measurement is typically combined with maternal serum markers to calculate risk assessment. NT screening is a non-invasive first-trimester screening tool that helps identify pregnancies at higher risk for genetic conditions.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as NT in clinical documentation, but spell out fully in patient-facing materials.
