velamentous cord insertion
Abnormal umbilical cord insertion where vessels travel through fetal membranes before reaching the placenta, creating risk of vessel rupture.
Full Definition
A placental abnormality where the umbilical cord inserts into the fetal membranes rather than directly into the placental disc. The umbilical vessels then travel unprotected through the chorioamniotic membranes before reaching the placenta. This condition occurs in approximately 1% of singleton pregnancies but is more common in multiple gestations. The exposed vessels are vulnerable to compression or rupture, potentially leading to fetal hemorrhage and death.
Usage
Usage note: Often confused with marginal insertion; velamentous specifically refers to vessels traveling through membranes.
