Gingival Biotype

The classification of gingival tissue morphology — typically described as thin-scalloped or thick-flat — which influences treatment planning and surgical outcomes.

Full Definition

Gingival biotype describes the inherent phenotypic characteristics of a patient's gingival tissue, encompassing thickness, keratinisation, and the underlying osseous architecture. A thin, scalloped biotype is more prone to recession and reduced wound healing after surgical intervention, while a thick, flat biotype tends to be more resilient. The concept is critical in implant placement, mucogingival surgery, and restorative periodontal planning. In recent literature, the preferred term has shifted from 'biotype' to 'phenotype' in some classification systems; editors should verify which term the commissioning publication prefers.

Usage

Usage note: The 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases favours 'phenotype' over 'biotype'. Editors should flag inconsistent usage.
